Challenge

Q NET aimed at creating an instrument for ultrasonic testing and the analysis of technical components and test objects of a wide range of materials and geometries for industrial and scientific use. Electronic engineers by Fraunhofer IZFP and software engineers by Lucid Software have developed a powerful and fast testing system with tomographic visualisation. For this purpose, the conventional multi-channel phased array technique was to be combined with a newly developed, fast tomographic visualisation technique called Migration Arrays.

Solution

Apart from the advantages of conventional phased array testing methods, the testing instrument AnalysUS offers numerous additional innovations. Intelligent software and the sensor control for example enable separate data collection and documentation of all ultrasonic information for each array element. In comparison to conventional phased array testing methods this method enables the realisation of more angles of incidence with higher clocking frequencies. Therefore, the method provides for a higher testing speed and more reliable testing results. A further achievement is the possibility of focussing on the whole near field of the synthetic aperture which leads to an improved resolution and test sensitivity. Phase corrections that can be realised throughout the entire length of the sound path enable a faster visualisation and a quantitative image evaluation. Apart from the usual test result illustration of A-, B- and C-scans you can also opt for three-dimensional real-time reconstructions on the screen in form of sector and compound scans.
